BLEPHAROPLASTY

EYELID SURGERYparpados-logo

Blepharoplasty is cosmetic surgery that corrects the excess skin of the eyelids that falls, generating difficulty opening the eyes, and also corrects the fat pockets that usually appear under the eyes. This technique seeks to improve the appearance of the eyelids through very hidden incisions, leaving imperceptible scars, improving the appearance of the gaze, leaving the eyelids smooth, wrinkle-free and rejuvenated.

With the passage of time, the skin of the eyelids tends to sag, become redundant, bags appear in the upper and lower eyelids, dark circles, causing very noticeable aesthetic effects, such as an aged appearance, giving an appearance of tiredness, sadness or exhaustion . For some, the problem becomes more acute when it affects vision.

Is blepharoplasty performed under local or general anesthesia?

This is a short procedure that can take approximately 2 to 3 hours. Generally this type of intervention is performed under local anesthesia, with some sedation to allow it to be a quiet procedure. In patients who are very nervous or who prefer to be completely asleep, the procedure can be performed under general anesthesia. The general anesthesia time is relatively short, reducing the risks that are of great concern to patients with this type of anesthesia.

Can blepharoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes, this surgery can be combined with other surgical facial procedures such as frontoplasty, eyebrow suspension, face lifting and cosmetic procedures such as the use of botulinum toxin (Botox), the use of hyaluronic acid, facial lipoinjection or laser hair removal. depending on the recommendation.

Are the blepharoplasty scars visible?

Blepharoplasty is performed with incisions that are usually located in natural fold sites so that they are not very noticeable using very small sutures that are removed very quickly so that they leave the least possible scar in both the upper and lower eyelids.

Does the shape of the eyes change this surgery?

The changes made with this surgery aim to remove excess skin from both eyelids, improve wrinkles by stretching the skin of the eyelids, and remove fat pockets when they are prominent. This means that the conformation of the eye does not change unless it requires additional procedures such as the reconstruction of the canthus in which the shape of the eyelids may occasionally change, but the surgeon always seeks to leave the eyes in their natural state.

Should you always operate all four eyelids?

The eyelids should be operated when they present deformity due to excess skin or prominences of the bags and not all the eyelids always appear. Many times the eyelids affected are only the upper or lower ones, so the surgeon must individualize each case.

What disability causes this eyelid surgery?

The greatest disability occurs due to edema or ecchymosis (purples) on the face. The edema usually improves in the first week by a high percentage and the ecchymoses do not always appear but if they appear they can last on average from 10 to 15 days. The patient should avoid the sun but can quickly return to their work activities.

Which specialist is better operating the eyelids?

The different surgical specialties confuse patients, such as plastic and cosmetic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, otorhinolaryngologists, eye plastic surgeons, ophthalmologists, specialists in aesthetics, etc. It is important to clarify that they are different specialties and that not all are plastic surgeons. My recommendation is to always look for Plastic Surgeons who are certified in the Colombian Society of Plastic Surgery.
